The Importance of Being Earnest

While reading, "The Importance of Being Earnest" I was happily surprised to find out that I was quite glad that I had researched the Victorian era. One topic I researched was marriage and its role in the Victorian era, and that was brought up constantly through out the entire book. When Lady Bracknell is interviewing Jack because he is to be her son-in-law if she approves was normal for that time. She simply had to make sure that she was getting a good deal by trading her daughter to this man, and that her family would make money out of it. Because he was not born into a wealthy family, Lady Bracknell decided he wasn't suitable for Gwendolyn.

Another topic I found helpful for getting full understanding after research was the difference between the social classes. In my research I found that the lower classes were not nearly as much as the upper classes. Lane and Algernon are both respected, but Algernon is treated much differently than his servant simply because he was born into a wealthy family.
